BUILDING TYPOLOGY
-Type
-Why?
-Specialty
-Goals
-Program

This semester I will be doing research on hotels. I have never design a hotel before and I am interested in residential interior design. Since condominiums and apartments are not accepted in this project, hotels are the most similar to those types of buildings. Another reason I chose a hotel as the building typology is because I would like to design and own one in the future. Therefore, the hotel will have a futuristic theme.  There are mostly low rise buildings surrounding the site and their style have not changed much since the 1800's. A futuristic hotel will stand out greatly. My goal is to respect the surrounding buildings and their style so I would have to be careful with the building height. I will also need to find a way to attract the locals who are not use to modern changes. As of now, the hotel will have a pool, restaurant, lounge, entertainment room, meeting and event rooms, gym, garden, spa, lobby, and suites.

  1. A hotel of the future does not necessarily only meant that it looks futuristic.
It is the function of the hotel that could be re-interpreted.

    1. Can the function of the hotel mean high tech amenities? For example, robotic luggage handler, guestrooms greet you as you enter by name, body heat sensor alerts staff you are in the room, mirror televisions, etc.

    2. The question you need to ask is how do you show all the things you mention above in architectural language.

  2. I would also look at smaller hotels that are set in the urban context as there are quite a lot of constraints for our sites being in a dense urban fabric.

  3. Every time you present a precedent I propose that you let us know what is the specific feature you are interested in: Are you focusing on the form, the program, the structure, the facade strategy, the interior materials, all of them? So, write down text explaining why a reference is important to you. Together with a text you should start creating diagrams of the above aspects so you analyze and visualize them.

Also, look at smaller scale precedents as well and give preference to projects that are already built.

In regards to your program, think about who is your user as well. What is the purpose of your program in relation to the subject (user) and the context.
While defining your program, I recommend that you go through this brief reading: Dan Wood and Amale Andraos of WORK AC, Program Primer v1. A Manual for Architects in PRAXIS 8 pgs 111-121. I do not think I can post it but feel free to send me your email so I can send it to you if you cannot find it.

Request: Please adjust your blog settings so that I get notified every time you post.

  4. Will do. I have changed my precedents and will be posting them soon with more information. Thank you for your recommendation on the reading. I just found it online and will start reading today.
