COLLAGE

Our assignment was to create three 11×17 collage boards to be used as our design concept.  The first collage is our impression of the site we selected.  The second is our interpretation of the word "edge". The last collage is based on the program of our project.

Walking to the Manhattan site on Peck Slip, I was expecting to see the typical congested city streets with lots of commercial buildings. I was wrong, all I saw was construction work and a big empty lot. While standing in front of the site, I started seeing many possibilities it offered and it motivated me to be creative. I tried using pictures that can represent possibilities. For example, the picture with the arrows and the silhouette of the head with the arrows coming out is a way of showing possibilities come in from many directions. The two upper left pictures looking into a space shows that even though the site is dull and empty, it has potential and you can look at the site and think of many ideas. The picture of the iceberg and the flower coming out of concrete is also a way of showing potential and the possibility of something great being created. The last two pictures of the girl with the book and the hand holding earth is a way to express imagination and creativity.

The second collage of my interpretation of the word "edge" is very straight forward. The edge of a mountain, a cliff, shapes, the outline of a petal's edge and the sharp edges of a cactus.

This is my first attempt on the program collage. My intentions were to show how hotels are now a fast growing business and each day they are getting more high tech. The two middle pictures represent business and technology. I also tried to show hospitality and a vacation get away with your family because that is what comes to mind when you think of a hotel. After it was finished, I noticed I was contradicting myself a little because I was combining both business with a family oriented hotel. It does not work well together so I decided to make a fourth collage.

For the final program collage, I decided to stick with a business hotel. The two middle images represents the connection of technology and business. My intentions is to use the pod hotel concept, modify it and use some of the typical hotel programs to attract people. On the top right corner is an image of the pods in the Nine Hours Hotel in Japan. Below that image are materials that I am considering to use. I removed the family oriented programs and added a business center, and a gym. To get a better understanding that I am designing a hotel I added some of the items you would find in a hotel such as, the towels, soups, and shampoos.

  1. Hello Cindy, be a bit more specific with your text. For example for the "site collage" which specifically are the hidden possibilities you are referring to? Your images refer to nature, energy, openness, branching, climate, other? It would be great to verbally define your ideas as well. This process will help with shape your site/ program/ design concepts rigorously.

Also, all three collages have a focal point in the center. Is the visual you have in the center the most important? On that note think about desaturating some of the visuals so you make others stick out. Create hierarchy. A collage has all the characteristics of a narrative.

    1. Hi. I edited my collage descriptions and explained why I chose each image. Since there is a focal point in the center in each collage, I will carry out that core concept throughout the project.

I agree with you that I need a sense of flow in my collages. I will play with different effects to make the most important images stand out.
